Reports from Lake Erie's western basin

June 13, 2006 -- The past weekend was very good for most walleye fishermen on the western basin of Lake Erie. Most catches were limit or near limit catches. Most of the fish caught were from the 2003 hatch and averaged 17 to 19 inches. The major activity seemed to be in the area if the Niagara reef and northwest of "C" can. There were however scattered reports of good catches from many areas across the western basin. Only a few reports of perch because most were concentrating on the great walleye fishing. The perch reported came from the area of Ballast Island and off Kelleys Island. Smallmouth season will soon be open and it should be a very good year for smallmouth around the islands and on the reefs all through the western basin. Mayflies appeared last week in small numbers at various locations, but yesterday evening the sky was full of the little critters. A major mayfly hatch seems to be in progress and since the fish gorge on them fishing can be difficult while the hatch is on. Walleye fishing this year is the best it has been since the late 1980's.
June 1, 2006 -- Walleye fishing has been very good in the western basin of Lake Erie for the last few weeks. Most charters have had limit or near limit catches, often by noon or shortly after. The schools of fish are constantly moving, but if you can locate them the fishing can be very good. For the most part the best time seems to be very early in the day. The reef complex in the Camp Perry firing range has been very productive as are the waters east of the Bass Islands near the Canadian border. Perch fishing has also been very good with several large catches reported from the waters east of Kellys Island. Smallmouth season opens late in June and also promises to be very good this year. The mayflies have not yet appeared on the lake but probably will within the next few weeks.
