Fish Reports from Lake Erie's western basin
_____________________________________________________

October 2, 2005 -- Perch fishermen have been doing well with many limit or near limit catches the last few weeks. The perch have been mostly of small to average size but usually with a few large fish mixed in. Larger perch are being taken from waters a few miles east of Kelleys Island shoal. A few walleye have been caught from rocky areas of shoals and reefs. Good catches of smallmouth bass are coming from the Canadian waters near Pelee Island and other island areas.

August 11, 2005 -- Walleye fishing in the western basin of Lake Erie is currently in the doldrums. A few small fish are being taken along the Canadian border near "F can" and along the north edge of the firing range between "A can" and "B can". Some perch are coming from the waters between Middle Bass Island and Middle Island. A few smallmouth have been caught off Kelleys Island and around North Bass Island. A few days ago a boat came into the marina that had just returned from the area of Wheatley, Ontario. They had several nice steelhead in their cooler and several walleye they caught while trolling for the steelhead. It was the best cooler of fish I had seen in quit a while.

July20, 2005 -- Lake Erie walleye fishing is not good right now. There are lots of small (under size limit) walleye to be had and some keepers are usually taken as well, but catch rates are very low in the western basin. Look for walleye along the Toledo shipping channel, near the Toledo water intake, around "A" and "B" cans on the firing range, and along the Canadian border near "F" and "G" cans. Generally the keepers are on the bottom and the smaller fish are up higher. Perch fishing is also in the doldrums but a few nice catches have come from the waters north of Kelleys Island.

July 10, 2005 -- The mayflies have been hatching for nearly a month and the walleye catch rate has really dropped as a result. Hopefully the hatch will be over soon and fishing can return to normal. There are concentrations of walleye west of West Sister Island and along the Canadian border northwest of "F" can. There are lots of small fish in these areas but there are also some legal size fish mixed in. Be careful when releasing the small walleye. By next year they should be of legal size and fishing should be much better. Larger catches of nice size walleye have been coming from the Canadian waters around Pelee Island and East Sister Island, but even these areas have not been producing well for the last few days. Smallmouth season is now open and there is some good action around the Bass Islands and even better around Pelee Island. Perch fishing has not been very good lately but a few nice catches have come from the deeper waters north of Kelleys Island. Persons trolling for walleye have reported taking some large perch along the Canadian border northwest of North Bass Island while fishing for walleye.

June 8, 2005 -- Walleye fishing has been good west of the Bass Islands. Trolling has been producing near limit catches. Drifting is usually but not always less productive. Good numbers of fish are spread across the flats but for the most part they are not trophy size. There are also good catches of smaller fish being taken west of West Sister Island. For perch look between Rattlesnake and Middle Bass Islands, east of Kelleys Island, and in the waters off Marblehead. The fish being cleaned today had large numbers of mayfly in their stomachs indicating that a mayfly hatch has begun and probably fishing will be tough for the next few weeks.

May 2, 2005 -- The limit on walleye n the Ohio waters of Lake Erie is now six per person per day. Some walleye were brought in over the weekend but not limit catches. Also, good catches of perch have been coming from east of Kelleys Island and from waters near the Marblehead lighthouse. Friday the weather bureau was forecasting strong winds and waves for Saturday and several charter boat operators cancelled their Saturday trips. Saturday morning the forecast had changed and the wind and waves were not bad. Those that hadn't cancelled their trips had a good day for fishing on Lake Erie. A little more accuracy from the weather bureau would be appreciated.

April 24, 2005 -- Last Thursday was not a bad fishing day. The weather was pleasant and the wind and waves were not too strong. Several limit catches were brought in from west of the islands and from the reef area northwest of Port Clinton. Friday it began to rain and the winds started to increase. The rain and the wind off the cold lake made it not a pleasant day. Some fish were brought in but not in large numbers. Saturday and Sunday were very windy, wet and cold with rain Saturday and snow Sunday. Few if any ventured out on the lake. Remember that on Lake Erie in Ohio waters the limit on walleye is three per person thru the end of April. May 1st the limit increases to six per person. Before the bad weather hit some nice limit catches of yellow perch were coming from the waters east of Kelleys Island.
